Description

Microcrystalline chitosan ( MCCh) in the form of a suspension is obtained from chitosan, under pure conditions by physicochemical modifications. Thanks to its high purity it is approved for medical applications. MCch is characterized by a number of functional properties, such as solubility in water, high adhesion, controlled bioactivity, biocompatibility and non-toxicity. It also possesses high stability, high chemical reactivity, high sorption capacity and very strong complexing properties.

Microcrystalline chitosan can have both in biomedical and industrial applications. Its biomedical applications include applying as a drug carrier (excipient), for the production of medical devices, in wound dressings, for cell scaffolding in tissue engineering, for purifying therapeutic proteins from bacterial endotoxins, as a dietary supplement.

Industrial applications include usage as a carrier for immobilizing enzymes used in the food industry, exerts a beneficial influence on health parameters and sensory quality of food, especially so-called functional food. In the cosmetic industry, it serves as a thickening, softening, viscosity regulator, stabilizer, and as a controlled-release agent for active substances. In agriculture, supplementation of grains and seeds results in antifungal action. Due to its ability to bind heavy and toxic metal ions, it is also a sorbent material in the process of water purification.
